Sister M. Elekta Sopková

“O happy death, how gentle and light you are
When Blessed Mother Mary stands by us in the final battle.”
Bl. Alphonse Marie
In the spirit of Christian hope, we announce that
Sr. M. Elekta – Veronika Sopková
Handed her life to the Creator on March 20, 2026,
At the age of 95 and the 76th year of her Religious Life.
Sister Mária Elekta, Veronika Sopková, was born on January 13, 1932,
in Spišský Hrhov, as the fifth child. She had eight siblings,
seven sisters and one brother who tragically lost his life
at the age of 35. Four days after her birth, Veronika was baptized.
Her parents deeply etched the Religion into her heart. During the Second World War,
German soldiers took the father of this large family to the front lines.
After four months, he escaped and returned to his family. The mother,
exhausted by the difficult situation, died at the age of 50. Her father bore this loss
with great difficulty and deep pain. He died at the age of 76.
Sister Elekta attended the school in Levoča, where the Religious Sisters taught.
Sister Anastasia, in particular, impressed her with her kindness.
Through her example, too, she deepened herself in the calling she felt in her heart.
So, at the age of 15, she came to the Sisters in Spišská Nová Ves,
where she graduated. On August 11, 1948, she was invested.
Due to the circumstances at the time, immediately after her investment,
she went to Prešov, where she worked in the hospital, the Pediatric department.
During the totalitarian regime, the Sisters—including Sister Elekta—were interned
in Podolínec, where they did various part-time jobs. There, she made her Final Profession
on December 8, 1960. After ten months,
the Sisters were transferred to the facilities for mentally and physically ill.
Sister Elekta worked in Uhrovec, Horné Štitáre, Zástranie. In 1991,
she moved to the community in Vrícko, where she helped the old and sick Sisters.
In the communities where Sister Elekta was actively engaged,
she also performed the ministry of sacristan with great love.
Her other ministry was the community at the Priestly Seminary in Badín,
where she assisted in the kitchen. The sound spiritual formation of the future priests
lay very close to her heart, and she constantly strove to support them through prayer,
self-sacrifice, sound counsel, and love. From 2010 to 2018,
she lived in the community in Nesvady, and since 2018, in Vrícko,
where she tried to serve to the best of her ability.
When the illness came, she was aware of it, yet she did not surrender to it.
She bore her suffering with resignation and in silence. After a necessary hospital stay,
she was discharged to home care, from where the Lord called her
Himself during the night of March 20th.
She was very happy in her Consecrated Life. She accepted the gift of her vocation
with great gratitude. In her autobiography, she writes—expressing the wish
—that the hymn of thanksgiving, "Te Deum," be sung at her final farewell to thereby
highlight God's love for the poor but beloved creature.
Grant her eternal rest, O Lord, and may eternal light shine upon her.
May she rest in peace. AMEN.
The farewell with our deceased Sisters was on Tuesday, March 24, 2026,
at 11 a.m. Holy Mass in St. Bartholomew Church, in Vrícko,
whereupon her mortal remains were laid
to rest in the local cemetery for a temporary repose.
We commend the soul of our deceased to the prayers of the Sisters
and of the faithful people of God.
